I received a voucher from my parents for a stay at the Miller Howe Hotel for my birthday. Miller Howe Hotel is a hotel in the Lake District, situated on Lake Windermere. Even though my birthday is in July we only just used the voucher. We also thought the Lake District would look beautiful in the autumn and we were fortunate enough to get a nice couple of days.
The voucher was for dinner, bed and breakfast. I was so excited about the dinner as the restaurant is an AA rosette award winner and the photos of the food looked amazing.
We checked into the hotel in the afternoon and were greeted by very kind, friendly staff. We decided to pay the supplement for the lake review room and had the stunning view below. It was beautiful waking up to this view in the morning. The room was big, clean and modern. The one downside was the free-standing copper bath, don’t get me wrong it looked amazing, but it was a bit of an effort to have a shower.
Before dinner is served you are invited to the lounge for a pre-dinner drink and some canapes. This was a lovely idea as it extended the whole dinner experience and because all guests did this there were plenty people sitting about. You also made your menu choices, of which there were five choices for each of the starter and main. Guests wanting something lighter could also just order some plain fish and vegetables. The hotel also has a huge wine selection.
First up starters. I had scallop with braised ox cheek, pumpkin and apple (left) and CB had partridge, confit leg croquette and chestnut sauce (right). That ox cheek, wow, what a winner. It was so tender and a really interesting combination with the scallop. Something a little bit different than your usual black pudding. CB’s dish was amazing too, that chestnut sauce was lovely and had so many flavours. The partridge was cooked beautifully too.
Mains next. I had hake with ragu of haricot blanc, chorizo, cauliflower and squid ink puree (left) and CB had roast haunch of venison, plum, creamed sprouts and sloe gin (right). Firstly that venison! Needs no explanation, only to say that it did taste as good as it looked. Again perfectly cooked and all the accompaniments went together so well. My dish was beautiful with some really unusual flavours. The beans and chorizo were cooked together with the squid ink and the flavour was so intense, it paired really well with the hake.
For dessert I had English apple millefeuille served with apple and rosemary sorbet (left) and CB had peanut butter cheesecake, lemon caramel and popcorn sorbet (right). Both desserts tasted just as good as they looked. I specially loved the apple and rosemary sorbet which was lovely and fresh.
Overall we were both so impressed with the Miller Howe Hotel. The dinner was possibly one of the best dining experiences I have ever had. I would definitely recommend the Miller Howe Hotel to anyone staying in the Lake District and I’m sure we will definitely make a trip again.
